Security Innovation Awards

Honouring the teams reinventing how the world defends data, identity and infrastructure — from breakthrough products to fearless research labs.

โฌข The Innovation Mandate in Security

Why security innovation deserves its own stage

Cybersecurity has always been a contest of speed, but the gap between attacker and defender has never been wider. Adversaries now weaponise generative models, automate reconnaissance across millions of assets, and rent ransomware infrastructure by the hour. The organisations that hold the line are not simply buying more tools — they are inventing entirely new ways to detect, contain and recover. The Security Innovation Awards exist to spotlight that invention, separating genuine breakthroughs from repackaged marketing.

Where many cybersecurity programmes reward scale or revenue, this award is deliberately weighted toward originality and measurable impact. We look for the team that shipped a detection technique no competitor had tried, the founder who reframed an old problem with a cleaner architecture, and the research unit whose disclosure changed an entire industry's defaults. Innovation here means a defensible, tested idea that moved the security needle for real users — not a slide deck.

Recognition matters because security innovation is often invisible until it fails. A control that quietly prevents thousands of intrusions rarely makes headlines, while a single breach dominates them. By naming and celebrating the inventors behind resilient systems, the World Technology Awards give buyers, investors and talent a credible signal of who is genuinely advancing the field — and give winning teams the visibility their work has long earned.

What We Recognise

Six honours within Security Innovation

Each category is judged independently so that a two-person research lab and a global vendor can both win on the strength of their ideas.

Security Innovation Company of the Year

For the organisation whose body of work over the year most advanced practical defence — through new products, original research and demonstrable customer outcomes.

Breakthrough Security Product of the Year

Awarded to a single product that introduced a genuinely novel control, architecture or detection method now proven in production environments.

Security Research & Innovation Excellence

For threat research, vulnerability disclosure or defensive technique that meaningfully shifted industry practice and protected users at scale.

Security Innovation Startup of the Year

Celebrating an early-stage venture (typically Seed to Series B) reimagining a security category with a sharper, more elegant approach.

Best Emerging Security Technology

For a nascent capability — AI-driven defence, post-quantum readiness, deception, or identity reinvention — showing the clearest path to mainstream adoption.

Security Engineering & Platform Excellence

Recognising the team that built security innovation into the fabric of a platform — secure-by-design, automated and scalable across the enterprise.

Judges evaluating security innovation entries at the World Technology Awards

How Entries Are Assessed

Judging criteria

Our panel of security practitioners, researchers and analysts evaluates every submission against the same transparent rubric. Evidence beats assertion at every stage.

  • Originality — how genuinely novel the idea, technique or architecture is relative to existing approaches.
  • Demonstrated impact — measurable reduction in risk, dwell time, false positives or breach exposure for real users.
  • Technical rigour — soundness of the engineering, threat model and validation, including independent testing where available.
  • Scalability & adoption — evidence the innovation works beyond a lab and is being deployed in production.
  • Responsible practice — ethical disclosure, privacy posture and transparency about limitations and assumptions.
  • Future potential — the trajectory of the work and its capacity to reshape defensive practice over the coming years.

FAQ

Security Innovation Awards questions

What counts as "security innovation" for these awards?+
A defensible, tested idea that advances how organisations detect, prevent, contain or recover from threats. This can be a new product, a novel detection technique, original threat research, a reinvented architecture, or an emerging technology such as post-quantum cryptography. Repackaged or purely incremental work is unlikely to score well; judges prioritise originality backed by evidence of real impact.
Can early-stage startups compete against large vendors?+
Yes. Categories are judged independently, and the Security Innovation Startup of the Year is reserved specifically for early-stage ventures. Across all categories, the rubric weights originality and impact rather than revenue or company size, so a small lab with a breakthrough can outscore a much larger entrant.
What evidence should we include in our submission?+
Provide measurable outcomes wherever possible — reductions in dwell time, false positives, breach exposure or incident volume — alongside a clear description of the threat model and how your approach differs from existing solutions. Independent test results, customer references, published research and deployment metrics all strengthen an entry.
How are the awards judged?+
A panel of security practitioners, researchers and analysts scores each entry against six criteria: originality, demonstrated impact, technical rigour, scalability and adoption, responsible practice, and future potential. Scores are aggregated transparently, and finalists may be asked for clarifying detail before winners are confirmed.
Should we enter the Security Innovation Awards or another cybersecurity award?+
Choose Security Innovation if originality is your strongest story. If your standout achievement is broad programme excellence, governance or intelligence work, consider the Cybersecurity Awards, Information Security Awards or Threat Intelligence Awards instead. Many organisations enter more than one category where each reflects a distinct strength.
