Africa's technology story is anchored by four powerhouse ecosystems often described as the "Big Four": Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and Egypt. Lagos has become the undisputed capital of African venture activity, home to a dense network of fintech leaders, payment infrastructure providers and developer talent. Nairobi — long nicknamed "Silicon Savannah" — pioneered mobile money at scale and continues to lead in climate tech, agritech and digital lending. Cape Town and Johannesburg anchor a mature South African market with deep enterprise software, cloud and cybersecurity expertise, while Cairo's rapidly expanding scene channels a vast pool of engineering graduates into SaaS, logistics and B2B marketplaces.

Beyond the headline cities, a second wave of hubs is maturing fast. Kigali has positioned itself as a regulatory-friendly testbed for drones, smart-city pilots and pan-African headquarters. Accra is a magnet for global remote-work talent and a growing base for AI and data services. Tunis, Casablanca, Dakar and Kampala each contribute specialised strengths — from francophone fintech corridors to open-source communities and university-led research. Cross-border ambition is the connective tissue: founders increasingly design for the entire continent from day one, and the African Continental Free Trade Area is accelerating that single-market mindset.

Growth is concentrated in sectors where technology solves visible, urgent gaps. Fintech remains the gravitational centre, expanding into payments, embedded finance and remittances. Alongside it, clean energy and off-grid solar, e-commerce and logistics, digital health, edtech and an emerging cohort of applied AI and developer-tooling startups are drawing serious capital and engineering attention. It is precisely this blend of scale, youth and necessity-driven invention that makes African technology so distinctive — and so deserving of structured, credible recognition.
